Aziza and Alberto Chevez wanted nothing more than to have their baby girl, Athena, grow up in a happy home surrounded by love.

So with a combined income of $40,000, the Bronx couple adopted two kittens, which they named Keith (pictured) and Precious.

"I wanted her to have the same love that I had as a kid growing up with cats," Aziza said.

But two weeks ago, Aziza, 20, a restaurant hostess, and Alberto, 22, a bartender, faced a decision: Buy kitty litter and cat food or Pampers and baby formula?

"I was running out of cat food," Aziza said. "They deserved a better life."

The couple walked to the ASPCA with the cats. On an adoption-release form they had circled the reason: financial.
