Rookies Anssi Salmela on defense and forward Petr Vrana have made the Devils' opening-night starting roster, with center Rod Pelley among those assigned to their Lowell farm yesterday.
The Devils are carrying two spare defensemen and only one extra forward on their 23-man roster, with Sheldon Brookbank, Andy Greene and Salmela on the backline with Colin White, Paul Martin, Bryce Salvador, Mike Mottau and Johnny Oduya.
Forward Nicklas Bergfors, defenseman Matt Corrente, forward Matt Halischuk, forward Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond, forward Pascal Rheaume and goaltender Scott Clemmensen also are among the Lowell assignments.
Martin Brodeur and Kevin Weekes are the Devils' goalies, while the forwards are Patrik Elias, Brian Rolston, Brian Gionta, Zach Parise, Travis Zajac, Jamie Langenbrunner, Jay Pandolfo, John Madden, David Clarkson, Mike Rupp, Bobby Holik, Dainius Zubrus and Vrana.
Forwards Fedor Fedorov, likely to be waived this week perhaps to play overseas, and Barry Tallackson, recovering from heart surgery, were unassigned.
New Jersey went 4-2-1 in preseason and opens regular play Friday at home against the Islanders.
