The movie "Tropic Thunder" is getting a stormy reception over its use of the word "retard."

The film, which opens today, uses the word "retard" or "retarded" 17 times, according to the chairman of the Special Olympics.

"We can't underestimate the word. It's very loaded," Special Olympics President J. Brady Lum said yesterday.

About 250 demonstrators picketed the movie's premiere in Los Angeles on Monday night.

Producers insisted they're not picking on the mentally handicapped. "We're making fun of actors and the ludicrous extent they go to get a role," said DreamWorks spokesman Chip Sullivan.
