IN an understated - or, put another way, boring - Oscar red carpet, Hollywood starlets ditched the glamorous look for a natural approach to hair and makeup.

From nude lips to cheeks with just a slight hint of rose colored blush, actresses showed off fresh faces and dewy skin.

Not that we were entirely disappointed: the trend is easy enough to copy, and will save regular women time getting ready in the morning. But then, these actresses had hours in front of professional makeup artists. Forgive us for thinking they should blow our socks off.

This year it was all about the pink-y, naked lip, healthy, glowing cheeks and a couple of coats of mascara.

Spanish stunner Penelope Cruz was natural and lovely in a dramatic Versace dress, elegant up-do and makeup so light, it hardly looked like she was wearing any.

And, with a hardly a curl on the carpet, even usually big-haired Beyonce stuck to stick straight locks. Reece Witherspoon, with brand-new and very pretty long extensions, Gwyneth Paltrow and Jada Pinkett Smith went for the same look.

But diva Jennifer Lopez kept it short and sweet, her hair softly framed her face and complemented her silvery rose colored Marchesa gown.

Ladies in red lips included Gwyneth Paltrow, Nicole Kidman, Rachel Weisz and Maggie Gyllenhaal. But even though the lips added a bit of drama to their dresses, there was a departure from the heavy, smoky eyes that were popular all fall. Just a sweep of gold, with hardly any shimmer, seemed to be a favorite. Messy, just out of bed looks were all over the carpet too - Jodie Foster looked like she just rolled out from under the covers, into her dress and over to the Kodak Theatre. Rachel Weiss and Cameron Diaz did a better job of keeping their tousled tresses messy enough that it looked sexy but not so much that they looked dirty.

Note to Jodie: Next time, set the alarm clock at least an hour earlier.
